It’s been a while since you’ve had such a long update, hasn’t it? I just couldn’t go without sharing how great our weekend was with you all. You have been faithful to pray for us to get us through the hard times and I am glad when I can share our fun times so you can join us in celebrating those as well. Last night on the bus ride from the Newark airport to New York City, I was talking to Eli about the concept of God allowing things to happen. Eli said, “Why did God make that tumor grow in me?” I said, “Well buddy, God didn’t necessarily make that tumor grow in you, but He certainly allowed it to happen.” That was of course met with an infinitely insightful question of, “Why?” I thought about the thousands of times that question had gone through my mind in the last 16 months and I said, “Well, there are several reasons why God would allow something like that to happen, but I can think of one good one right now. God knew that if He let that tumor grow inside of you that the Doctors would take it out and would make you feel better. And He also knew that if you came to the hospital, you would meet all of those friends that you have now from Iowa City and New York. Plus, He knew that you would have thousands of people praying for you that would also become your friends and even an entire football team that would become your friends. If you wouldn’t have had that tumor, you probably wouldn’t have met all of those people.” Eli considered that and said, “I have a lot of friends, don’t I dad?” I told him that he was a very fortunate boy to have so many friends and that God is the best one he has. Thank you all for being Eli’s friend. Thank you for lifting him up once again this week as he goes through the extremely painful 3F8 treatments to make sure we are getting every last bit of neuroblastoma that might still be lurking in his body, undetected by scans. Thank you also for praying for our other little friends that we have met on this journey that are fighting their own wars. I pray that you all are blessed for joining us on this journey and that this experience enhances your “friendship” with God.
