Deep discussions

Not much to report. Yesterday was a rough day for Eli. He kept having fevers and was pretty uncomfortable. Today the fevers have gone down a bit and Eli has definitely felt better. He was even laughing at me, but asking me to stop because it hurt him to laugh. It was definitely a better day. We are pretty much going to be stuck here until this Friday at least since that is when they plan on removing the drainage tube from Eli’s sewed up stomach. Hopefully the infections and fevers are under control by then and we can go back to the Ronald on antibiotics! No word yet on whether our 3F8 has been delayed yet another week. My intuition would say we probably will wait another week to start the beta glucan, but I could be wrong.

Eli and I had an interesting conversation tonight. It went something like this:

E: “Dad, do souls really live forever?” – Apparantly he learned this from the movie Iron Giant.
A: “Yes, that’s true. When someone dies, their soul either goes to Heaven or it goes to Hell. Heaven is a beautiful place with God. Hell is a bad place away from God. If you believe that Jesus died for your sins and came to life 3 days later, you will go to Heaven. If you don’t, you go to Hell. It’s hard for kids to understand, so all kids’ souls go to heaven. When you become an adult, you’ll have to decide if you believe in Jesus or not.”
E: “Well, I believe in Jesus. And when I become an adult, I’ll believe in Jesus even more than I do right now.”
A: “That’s great, I’m glad to hear that!”
E: “Why don’t all adults believe in Jesus?”
A: “Because some adults think they can get to Heaven by being good or that God doesn’t even exist.”
E: “Why did Jesus die on the cross? If I was God, I wouldn’t have done that.”
A: “Then how would you save people?”
E: “I would save them like a superhero. How did Jesus die on the cross if he only had nails in his hands and feet and not his tummy?”
A: “Well, because they beat him and hung him up and he was exhausted and died.”
E: “What did they pam his back with?” – Pam is Eli’s word for beat. Not sure why, it just always has been.
A: “A whip with bones and glass in the end to tear his back.”
E: “Ouch, that would hurt worse than a T-Rex bite.”
A: “Yeah, I think you’re right.”
E: “I’m a smart little kid, huh? Do you think I’m a grown up? Well I’m a kid!”

I’m sure that a lot of you might think that was a pretty detailed and adult like conversation to have with a four year old, but those of you that have had conversations with Eli before understand. He comprehends more than even I expect sometimes. It was a really fun conversation and I look forward to having many more like it down the road.

That’s it for tonight. Thanks, as always, for your prayers and support. Also, thanks to everyone who has been contributing to Band of Parents. Over 4% of the $25k goal has been reached just by Eli Horn supporters alone! Thank you.
