Only two more days of radiation left! Eli handled last week like a champ. The radiation has definitely made him a bit nauseous, but it usually only comes a few times per day for a short time and then it’s gone. We have 5 days down (10 sessions) and only have 2 more days to go (4 sessions). His counts are a bit lower than normal (white blood count = 2500, ANC = 1500, Platelets = 220k, and red blood = 11.1), but definitely not in the neutropenic range. Wednesday is the day we start beta glucan for 17 days. Oh yeah, that’ll be a fun day. 🙂 I shouldn’t get too far ahead of myself. We will be starting beta glucan IF Eli is HAMA negative. Those results should come Wednesday morning. Then, assuming Eli hasn’t HAMA’d, we’ll start two weeks of 3F8 again next week (5/5/08).
This weekend was nice. Friday night we went to another Mets game where we saw the Atlanta Braves stomp up on the Mets. Saturday we went to a fun restaurant called Mars 2112 with another house family that we have become really close to. Their boy Griffin (whom I’m sure I have mentioned on this CarePage before), and Eli get along really well. I know what the long time CarePage post readers are thinking. Do we get a food review? I know it has been forever since I have done a food review, so one is long overdue!
Mars 2112 is a fun place to go. When you walk in, you take a spaceship ride to Mars ($2/person) and the entire restaurant feels like it is in a cave on the red planet. Everyone dresses the part of intergalactic waiters and waitresses of course, and there are several martians walking around the place. It’s definitely a fun place to take the kids. It’s not, however, a fun place for your wallet. A burger with fries will set you back $15 and that’s the cheapest thing on the menu. The killer though, is the kid’s meals. $10 for each entre, or you can get a kid’s meal for $17 which includes a soda, entre, dessert, and $5 card for the game room. So, I had a burger, Lacey had a salad, and Eli had a kid’s meal and our total with tax, tip and “spaceship ride†was $75 for the three of us! Thankfully we had a $25 gift certificate I had purchased on restaurant.com for $5, so it made it a bit more palatable. I don’t think all of the food was “out of this world”, but I think our particular choices were fantastic. Lacey’s salad had blue cheese, pear, and walnuts. I added blue cheese and sizzled onions to my burger and it was delicious. Eli got the Corn Dog meal which actually came with two corn dogs, and he ate both of them, so I’m assuming they were edible. So, my recommendation if you are bringing kids to NY is to save up your money for a fun night at Mars 2112 and be sure to stop by restaurant.com and buy a $25 gift certificate to bring with you. If you aren’t bringing kids, I’d skip Mars 2112 and head for A La Turka or Maz Mezcal.
Today we walked over to the West side of Manhattan to Broadway and walked up to a street fair going on between 96th Street and 110th Street. It was basically a bunch of food vendors and clothing/accessory vendors selling their goods on the closed off street. It was fun for Lacey and I, but I think the boys missed the whole thing since they were asleep in their strollers. Eli has been doing a lot of sleeping the last few days, most likely another radiation side effect. We had to sample the food offerings of course, and had candied grapes (yeah, like candied apples, except they were candied grapes on a stick), grilled corn on the cob (we miss Iowa), a beef shiskabab, and something called a Mozzerepas which are two cornbread pancakes with mozzarella cheese melted in between them. They were fantastic! There you go, two food reviews in one post to make up for my recent deficiencies.
Thank you all for all of your prayers! We are excited to be wrapping up radiation this week, hopefully going over our CT results with Dr. Kushner, and getting started (hopefully) on beta glucan in preparation for Cycle Three of 3F8!
